Beekeeping is one of the most profitable agribusiness opportunities in Kenya because it requires relatively low land, low maintenance, and has a ready market for honey and other bee products.
The first step in starting beekeeping is choosing a suitable location. An apiary should be placed in a quiet area away from noise, with access to flowering plants and a nearby water source. Bees thrive in environments with plenty of vegetation.
The second step is acquiring modern beehives and the right equipment such as a bee suit, smoker, hive tool, and honey harvesting equipment. Using modern equipment makes hive management easier and safer.
The third step is colony establishment. This can be done by attracting bees naturally using baiting methods or by buying a bee colony from a trusted supplier.
After the bees settle in the hive, regular inspection and proper hive management are important to ensure the colony remains healthy and productive.
With proper training and management, a single hive can produce honey multiple times a year, making beekeeping a reliable source of income.
